Price guide to silver tea caddies. Silver tea caddies were popular during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Few 17th century tea caddies are found today.  The majority of silver tea caddies tended to have a rectangular form although some had elliptical and octagonal shapes especially by the late 1700’s.

American silver tea caddy, Bigelow, Kennard & Co

American silver tea caddy, Bigelow, Kennard & Co., Boston, circa 1870 rectangular with cut corners, each side with bright-cut geometric paneling enclosing a reserve, the front with monogram CG, the sides with chinoiserie scenes, the first of a figure with parasol, the second of a seated couple, the back unengraved, hinged cover marked on base length 4 7/8 in.

12.5 cm 16 oz 15 dwt 522.5 g. Sold for 1,500 USD at Sotheby’s in 2018

Price guide to satinwood tea caddies. When first introduced to Europe, tea was extremely expensive, and kept under the eye of the mistress of the house, often under lock and key. The containers used were therefore often expensive and decorative, to fit in with the rest of a drawing-room or other reception room. Hot water was carried up from the kitchen, and the tea made by the mistress of the house, or under her supervision. Reference: Wikipedia

Ralph Turnbull of Kingston Jamaica Mahogany and Satinwood Tea Caddy, of octagonal form in mahogany with a silvered border and silvered bail handle and escutcheon, the hinged top opening to a mahogany cover with a satinwood banded border, the obverse applied with a paper label for Ralph Turnbull. Dimensions: 7 in.h. x 10 x 10 in. Condition: Shrinkage cracks and normal aging, interior cover with shrinkage crack.Lacking key and interior fittings.

Sold for US$1,100m at Neue Auctions in 2022
