Very Large Scandinavian Oak Domed Blanket Chest Hand crafted, with a slightly domed top, this enormous antique, Scandinavian trunk features chip carving in rosette designs on the front panel and further chip carving on the moulded base. It has huge, hand forged iron, twisted side bails. Dated 1755 DIMENSIONS Width 72 Depth 27 Height 27 in. Sold for $300 at Bruhn’s Auction Gallery in 2018

A Charles II oak mule chest, circa 1680 the hinged top enclosing a lidded till and fitted compartments and two panelled apron drawers 78cm. high, 139.5cm. wide, 61cm. deep; 2ft. 6 3/4 in., 4ft. 7in., 2ft. Sold for 3,000 GBP at Sothebys in 2018

Walnut valuable boxes / coffers are recognisable range from a light golden brown and light grey brown. Burr walnut is recognisabe by the knotty whorls in the grain.

Welsh Borders Meal Chest 16th century

A 16th century boarded oak clamp-front meal chest or ark, Welsh Borders, circa 1550. Having a typical dome-lid constructed using three overlapping boards wedged and tenoned into the upright and extended shaped-ends, with historic iron pivotal side hinges, the side boards clamped and tenoned between broad stiles that all terminate with a characteristic concave-shaped internal edge, 146cm wide x 61cm deep x 84cm high, (57in wide x 24in deep x 33in high)

An ark was typically used for the storage of grain, such as meal, corn and flour. Traditionally it is thought the lid was not fixed in place and once removed the dished underside allowed use as a trough for kneading dough.
