Doucai Boxes

Doucai Boxes. Doucai is a technique in painting Chinese porcelain, where parts of the design, and some outlines of the rest, are painted in underglaze blue, and the piece is then glazed and fired. The rest of the design is then added in overglaze enamels of different colours and the piece fired again at a lower temperature of about 850°C to 900°C. The style began in the 15th century under the Ming dynasty in the imperial factories at Jingdezhen, Reference: Wikipedia

Price guide to antique Cloisonne boxes. During the reigns of Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911), cloisonne improved and reached its artistic summit. Colors were more delicate, filigrees more flexible and fluent, and scope was enlarged beyond the sacrifice-process wares into snuff bottles, folding screens, incense burners, tables, chairs, chopsticks, and bowls. The general method for making cloisonné involved first soldering brass wires to the surface of a copper object to form a pattern or illustration; then, according to the requirements of each pattern, colored enamels were filled in. All elements and conditions were perfectly in place for a thriving jade industry where an interesting phenomenon of diversity also emerged: the market’s taste diverging from the imperial preference, elegance and vulgarity coexisting, and the retro clashing with the trend. In Chinese culture, the bamboo, plum blossom, orchid, and chrysanthemum (often known as méi lán zhú jú 梅兰竹菊) are collectively referred to as the Four Gentlemen. These four plants also represent the four seasons and, in Confucian ideology, four aspects of the junzi (“prince” or “noble one”). The pine (sōng 松), the bamboo (zhú 竹), and the plum blossom (méi 梅) are also admired for their perseverance under harsh conditions, and are together known as the “Three Friends of Winter” (岁寒三友 suìhán sānyǒu) in Chinese culture. The “Three Friends of Winter” is traditionally used as a system of ranking in Japan, for example in sushi sets or accommodations at a traditional ryokan. Price guide to antique Famille Rose porcelain boxes. Famille-Rose, sometimes known as Rose Famille, was introduced during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor (1654–1722), possibly around 1720. It used mainly pink or purple and remained popular throughout the 18th and the 19th centuries, also being widely adopted by European factories.

Porcelain Seal Paste Box Wang Bingrong

A carved lime green glazed porcelain seal paste box and cover
Wang Bingrong, 19th century.

The circular box carved along the exterior side walls with a raised border of formalized waves below incised lines and raised dots indicating the splashes from the motion of crashing waves, the fitted cover crisply carved with two scaly five-clawed dragons, each with an open jaw and prominent fangs, the bulging eyes picked out in black, pursuing a flaming pearl amidst fluidly rendered wisps of cloud, the base finely carved in relief with a Wang Bingrong zuo mark, enclosed by a splayed circular foot ring, the exterior covered entirely in lime green glaze except the foot pad, the interior glazed in orange-red except the contact areas of the box and its cover.
