Information on Evald Nielsen, Danish silver maker including hallmarks / makers mark.

Evald Nielsen (June 5, 1879 in Stubbekøbing, Denmark – May 12, 1958 in Copenhagen) was a Danish silversmith and long-standing master of the Goldsmith’s Guild of Copenhagen and one of the leading men behind the organizing of the Danish gold- and silversmiths.

Evald Nielsen opened his workshop the year after the well known Georg Jensen started as silversmith. In the years to come Evald Nielsen put his mark on the Danish skønvirke-style (jugend).

Contrary to Georg Jensen Evald Nielsen based his firm on his own design and only to a small extent used artists and architects as designers.

During the first decades he himself designed jewellery, hollow ware and cutlery. He generated his own style, among other things characterized by the so-called drawn out or stretched mountings holding the stones of the jewellery. Reference: Wikipedia

William Comyns

William Comyns Silver Maker Marks and Information. William Comyns, silversmith, was apprenticed from 1849 to 1856 with George J. Richards of Clerkenwell. He registered his mark on 26 January 1859 and is recorded as a plateworker, of 2 Carlyle Street, Soho Square. From 1869, he was at 1 Percy Mews, Rathbone Place; from 1878 at 16 Silver Street, Gonden Square, and from 1888 at 41 Beak Street. Three sons are recorded and they succeeded to the business at the time of his death. A new mark was registered in 1912 and the business remained in the family until 1953. (Charlotte Gere).

William Comyns produced many different silver items including boxes, frames, mirrors, decanters and novelty items such as the wheelbarrow below. One of the most renown design features of William Comyns are the flourishes, cherubs or putti, nymphs and natural foliage.

Katsuhide Japanese Silver Maker Hallmarks and Information. Katsuhide was a prominent Japanese artist who produced work during the Meiji Period (1869-1912), late 19th-early 20th century. Katsuhide also created items for The Maruki Works Art Factory which was one of the best studios during the Meiji era. Located in Tokyo, the studio employed many of Japan’s finest artists including Katsuhide.

Mappin & Webb traces its origins to 1775, when Jonathan Mappin opened a silver workshop in Sheffield, then as now a major centre of the English silver trade. The business eventually became Mappin Brothers.

One of Jonathan Mappin’s great grandsons, John Mappin, started his own business in London, Mappin & Company, in 1860, which became Mappin, Webb & Co. in 1862 after John Mappin was joined by his brother-in-law George Webb. The first Mappin & Webb store opened in 1860 at 77-78 Oxford Street, London and the company’s candelabras, fine silverware and vanity products swiftly gained renown. As a natural progression from silverware, Mappin & Webb began designing jewellery. Mappin, Webb & Co. acquired Mappin Brothers in 1903. Reference: Wikipedia

Asahi Shoten was a Japanese silver maker. This mark has been found on silver items dating to around the 1920’s to 1940’s. Other silver items found by this maker are dresser jars, cigarette cases, flatware and compacts.

Georg Arthur Jensen was a Danish silversmith and founder of Georg Jensen A/S. From childhood, Jensen had longed to be a sculptor and he now pursued this course of study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He graduated in 1892 and began exhibiting his work. Although his clay sculpture was well received, making a living as a fine artist proved difficult and he turned his hand to the applied arts. First as a modeller at the Bing & Grøndahl porcelain factory and, beginning in 1898, with a small pottery workshop he founded in partnership with Christian Petersen. Again the work was well received, but sales were not strong enough to support Jensen, by this point a widower, and his two small sons.

In 1901, he abandoned ceramics and began again as a silversmith and designer with the master, Mogens Ballin. This led Jensen to make a landmark decision, when in 1904, he risked what small capital he had and opened his own little silversmithy at 36 Bredgade in Copenhagen. Reference: Wikipedia

In the 1950s and ’60s Scandinavian design, with its simplicity of form and natural materials, was influential all over the world in many media, from textiles to furniture. Jewellery was designed around organic shapes, often merging to become miniature sculptural elements. Finely crafted silver was the preferred material, often in combination with inexpensive gemstones in unconventional cuts and asymmetrical compositions.

Unlike other European companies, which preferred anonymity, the Scandinavian firms such as Georg Jensen in Denmark promoted their designers and encouraged them to make a name of their own, such as Henning Koppel. Reference: Victoria and Albert Museum
