Information and marks for Limoges boxes. Limoges porcelain designates hard-paste porcelain produced by factories near the city of Limoges, France beginning in the late 18th century, but does not refer to a particular manufacturer.

Limoges had strong antecedents in the production of decorative objects. The city was the most famous European centre of vitreous enamel production in the 12th century, and Limoges enamel was known as Opus de Limogia or Labor Limogiae. It had also been the site of a minor industry producing plain faience earthenware since the 1730s. Reference: Wikipedia

Lapis Lazuli has been highly regarded since neolithic times. It was used to make beads and seals. The ancient Egyptians often used this stone to make amulets and scarabs as well as jewellery. It was often mixed with turquoise and gold.

Below are some examples of later lapis lazuli boxes. It was often used alongside precious metals and other gemstones. Considering it’s rich colour, it is not surprising that many imperial pieces used this semi-precious gemstone.

Jade is an ornamental mineral, mostly known for its green varieties, which feature prominently in ancient Asian art. The term jade is applied to two different minerals that are composed of different silicate compounds:

Nephrite consists of a microcrystalline interlocking fibrous matrix of the calcium, magnesium-iron rich amphibole mineral series tremolite (calcium-magnesium)-ferroactinolite (calcium-magnesium-iron). The middle member of this series with an intermediate composition is called actinolite (the silky fibrous mineral form is one form of asbestos). The higher the iron content, the greener the colour.

Jadeite is a sodium- and aluminium-rich pyroxene. The precious form of jadeite jade is a microcrystalline interlocking growth of jadeite crystals.

Lacquerware Boxes Antique Information.

Lacquerware in its most decorative form was first developed during the Shang Dynasty although primitive prehistoric examples have been found.

Lacquerwares include amber, jet, jade, quartz, chalcedony, agate, amethyst, sard, onyx, carnelion, heliotrope and jasper. Below are some examples of lacquerware boxes.

Red Cinnibar Laquerware Box Lacquer Tobacco Box Qing Dynasty Red Lacquerware Box A LACQUER WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO) Southeast Asian red lacquered lidded box Drop-front secretary (Secrétaire en armoire) German rococo gilt-brass mounted japanned travelling writing box - lacquerware boxes Korean Side Dish Lacquer Box Bird Offering Container Box Box, lacquer in shape of a barrel,

Lacquerware is named because of the technique used, which is that the item is covered with lacquer, a clear varnish.

Lacquerware boxes are not the only items which used this technique. Other objects includ Chinese furniture and other oriental furniture.

Antique lacquerware boxes can sometimes be inlaid with substances such as mother of pearl or it can sometimes be carved as in the image of the red cinnibar lacquerware box of the Yongle period.

History of Antique Lacquerware Boxes

Sophisticated techniques for creating lacquerware first appeared during the Shang Dynasty.

The Han Dynasty saw the beginning of elaborate, incised decoration while the Tang Dynasy saw precious metals such as gold and silver being inlaid into lacquerware. Much of this inlay consisted of birds, animals and flowers.

Burmese Lacquerware

Burmese lacquerware uses the sap tapped from the varnish tree Melanorrhoea usitatissima or Thitsee that grows wild in the forests of Myanmar (formerly Burma).

Snuff Boxes – Information and History.

In eighteenth-century Europe, Paris led the production of high-quality luxury goods. Parisian goldsmiths made a wide range of small, personal articles such as snuff boxes; étuis to hold sealing wax, tweezers, or utensils for sewing; souvenirs, which contained thin ivory tablets for note taking; and shuttles for knotting lace.

Gold snuff boxes and boxes decorated with portrait miniatures were prized and frequently given as royal gifts, often to ambassadors or members of the court in lieu of cash payments for their services. Coveted and admired, these boxes were produced from a variety of materials. The best were skillfully made of gold and embellished with diamonds, enameled decoration, lacquer, and other luxurious materials. By the middle of the century, the taking of snuff had become an entrenched social ritual, and the snuff box, too, had become an important social prop. Snuff boxes were considered highly fashionable accessories, with some merchants advertising new boxes with each change of season. The popularity of snuff boxes extended to all levels of society, and for those who could not afford gold, boxes were produced in less expensive materials such as silver, tortoiseshell, porcelain, or domestically produced lacquer.
